Furniture Made From Pallets

Usually used in shipping, wooden pallets can be turned into sleek designs for both indoor and outdoor furniture. Using basic woodworking skills, wooden pallets can be turned into coffee tables, sofas, beds, chairs, patio seating, shoe cabinets, bookcases, kitchen worktops, and almost any piece of furniture you desire. Wooden pallets are eco-friendly and can withstand heavy weights and rough handling. They are inexpensive and sometimes free, and they look great for both indoor and outdoor furniture.

One of the joys of making furniture from pallets is that a rough, less-than-perfect build will only add to the rustic, shabby chic appearance that makes this style of furniture so appealing. Wooden pallets can be remodeled into attractive and unique pieces of furniture for any part of your home, including the lounge, bedroom, kitchen, garden, bathroom, patio, and hallways.

1. Wooden Pallet Dining Tables

Whether you want to create a dining or a kitchen table, wooden pallets are particularly useful and inexpensive. And since they are lightweight, you can move them around (even for outdoor use) just like any other pallet furniture. If you are going to use the table for prolonged outdoor use, use formaldehyde or a coat of paint to protect it from outdoor environment, including fungal growths. A DIY pallet table is fun to make, plus you will have a great satisfaction every day knowing that you made it all by yourself.

2. Wooden Pallet Couches

Don't we all love to have a comfortable couch to relax on and enjoy our favorite TV shows or movies? Wooden pallet couches are some of the easiest and most inexpensive pallet furniture that you can create out of timber pallets. They are not only comfortable and unique, but unlike other couches, they also have open spaces allowing indoor environments to be airy.

For the best and most comfortable wooden pallet couch, add some steel feet to make it stable and immoveable. Then stuff it with feathers and wool to make it cozy and comfortable. Finally, add some thick cushions, and your wooden pallet couch is ready for your comfort.

3. Wooden Pallet Chairs

Among the most common pallet furniture are chairs made out of timber pallets. You can either create dual or solitary occupancy wooden pallet chairs, but you will find that the dual variety is easier to make since you don't have to cut the wooden pallet in half. With dimensions of about 72 inches wide by 50 inches of solid timber, you can easily make a two-person chair from a couple of pallets.

Making pallet furniture is also a great business opportunity. If you have a knack for unique designs and styles, you can create stylish pallet furniture and sell them to homeowners, hotels, or country holiday cottages and secure some additional income.

4. Wooden Pallet Beds

Although beds and bed frames are expensive items, a bedroom will be incomplete without one. One piece of furniture you can easily create out of wooden pallets is a bed, and you can accomplish this with minimal effort or woodworking tools or skills. The prime advantage of a pallet bed is that not only does it require less effort and cost to create, but it can be easily configured into a different shape or design, size, and style and still provide the same basic function of a comfortable and solid bed. At the very least, all you need is to join the pallets into a reasonable bed frame size, drop a mattress and add a few finishing touches to make it look really impressive.

Pallet beds are inexpensive and can be reconfigured into new bed shapes to meet your bedroom feel and style. You can varnish or stain the bare wood for a rustic look or paint it to match the room's color scheme. The addition of brightly colored bed sheets and multiple-sized pillows with fairy lights tucked between the pallets can create a stunning and inviting space.

5. Outdoor Pallet Seating

One area of your home that can really benefit from some pallet furniture is the garden or patio area. Outdoor furniture is expensive and may only be used for a few months out of the year, so this is another area where you can create an inviting setting without breaking the bank.

Pallet seating areas are simple to construct. Usually, all you have to do is stack a couple of pallets on top of one another and add one upright for a backrest, securing it in place with a few wood screws. By painting the pallets in a bold color, it creates a stunning focal point to the natural backdrop of a natural environment. The addition of a few comfortable cushions will let you enjoy your outside area late into the evening.

Wooden pallet benches look great as indoor, as well as patio/garden furniture. They are not only inexpensive and eco-friendly but durable as well. They can be quickly modified or redesigned to match a home's theme or decor.

6. Pallet Flooring

Old shipping pallets can be separated, cut to size, and made into stylish and inexpensive alternatives to parquet flooring. In fact, old and worn pallet slats look fantastic when stained and varnished.

Where to Get Pallets

The majority of wooden pallets are just used once and then discarded, usually at a cost to the business that received the stock delivered to them. So they are often more than happy to let you take them away for free. This is one of the best things about creating furniture from pallets: you can get materials for free, and when they are a little worn and distressed, they look even better!

You will often see them piled up behind businesses, industrial estates, and at self-storage locations. Most of the time, they are being thrown away, but it is always best to ask before taking them. They might even have some better quality ones inside for you! Once you start looking, you will notice them everywhere!

How to Dismantle a Pallet

When making pallet furniture, you will often need to remove some of the slats, replace broken ones, or take the pallet apart completely for more complex projects. Although it can be done with a hammer and pry bar, you will often end up damaging the wood in the pallet. The best and quickest method is shown in the video above.

Hi Linda, thanks for your comment!

I don't have plans for the patio furniture but you don't need them really. The furniture is made from just a few 'Euro Pallet' sized pallets stacked on top of one another with the some of the slats removed on the bottom pallets. For the back rest you just need to fix the slats you removed from the pallets together and screw it to the stacked pallets. Just make sure all the pallets are the same size. Good luck, please send me pictures when you make it!

Hi Djuna,

No I don't have exact plans for the bench but it is a pretty simple design. It would be best to paint the pallets first, then stack the pallets on top of one another and use a few space pieces of wood to fix them together to stop then sliding apart. Then for the backrest remove the bottom layer of a pallet and the blocks separating the two layers, then use screws to fix it to the stacked pallets. This
